Last week I highlighted an article, In Search of a Real Urban Policy, from the NY Times examining the need to push urban issues through this year’s political season. Today they posted two letters supporting their arguments.

Since urban policy doesn’t rate billing on the candidates’ Web sites, we shouldn’t be surprised that candidates don’t talk about culture and the arts, even though it is the cities’ cultural vibrancy that attracts visitors and residents alike; and nonprofit arts alone inject $134 billion annually into the national economy.
Yet candidates for elective office at every level of government have learned that they only need assure advocates of their support, which too often evaporates in the face of other pressing budget concerns.
They know that the arts are not a salient issue that will cause elected officials to lose voter support.
