Gas Prices Have Their Own Y2K Affect
With rising temperatures come road trips. With more road trips come higher, summer gas prices. With higher gas prices come the following glitch.

On my recent vacation/road trip through Maine, I noticed a similar side effect of rising gas prices on older pumps.
Upon entering Greenville, ME at the southern tip of Moosehead Lake, I pulled into a gas station to fill up the rental car. The station had old gas pumps similar to the one pictured.

I apologize for not having taken a picture of the pump and the following note, but I was little more focused on vacation.
Please pay inside, quoted price on pump is 1/2 the actual sale. We apologize for any inconvenience.
As you may infer, the dials are spinning too quickly for the machine to operate properly under today’s gas prices. Therefore, the station must set the price at the pump to roughly half the price in order for the dials to spin at half the speed.
This serves as another example of our amazing short-sightedness, leaving me with the following question…
Is this a result of an actual inability to have imagined $4 gas or our unflinching habit of ignoring the long-term?
